Performing Pictures documented four artists' performance works which were part of the exhibition Love, Body and Work, Artistic Research in Uncertain Times at the Royal Institute of Art 2021
Client: The Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm
Year: 2021
Media: Video
To make space for art created within a research framework, the Royal Institute of Art and the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts have an ongoing collaboration to display the school’s artistic research in a series of exhibitions. An exhibition is an obvious forum for artistic research, with its opportunities for publicizing the complex multisensory experiences of artistic research. And herein lies the long history of exhibition-making, running parallel with the history of art, which forms an organic branch of artistic research to investigate, comment on and develop. However, in 2021, the exhibition format was challenged by the restrictions imposed by the corona pandemic. While smaller groups could visit the exhibitions space, performance works faced a challenge to finding their audience. Therefore, Performing Pictures was engaged to film the performances for the exhibition “Love, Body and work – Artistic Research in Uncertain Times” (Kärlek, kropp och arbete – Konstnärlig forskning i en osäker tid), at Konstakademin, 27 March–9 May 2021.

George Kentros — This Violin Must Die
Initially conceived as part of the Royal Institute of Art’s artistic research project Work a work, “This Violin Must Die” by George Kentros is an immersive performance that reflects on the ecology and economy of instrumental performance and the concept of musical work.
The work isolates the violinist’s performative or learned knowledge and technique. And it poses the question, is a violinist better prepared to break a violin than someone without knowledge of violins?

Shiva Anoushirvani — Om O / About O
Anoushirvani focuses on the materialisation of the act and demands of love and caregiving, caretaking and self-care, in the presence of violence. In the performance About O, Anoushirvani employs participatory act and choreography, installation, video and the text-based work OM O, to explore the almost invisible scope of emotional labour.

Mara Lee — Främlingsfigurer: Performance Lecture
Mara Lee´s performance lecture is based on her book of the same name “Främlingsfigurer“ (Albert Bonniers Förlag, 2021).
In her work she focuses on the interaction of emotions and strangers. The negative affective states of contempt and anger are standard reactions in encounters with the Other, and useful in explaining the mechanisms of xenophobia and racism
